Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the 29-year-old suspect behind Wednesday's shooting of two National Guard troops near the White House, has a complex and intriguing background. According to his relatives, Lakanwal served alongside US Special Forces in Afghanistan for 10 years before moving to the US in September 2021. He settled in Washington state and was resettled through Operation Allies Welcome, a program initiated by former President Joe Biden to evacuate and resettle tens of thousands of Afghans after the US withdrawal. Lakanwal's family, who were targeted by the Taliban in Afghanistan, expressed shock and confusion at his alleged actions. 'We were the ones who were targeted by the Taliban in Afghanistan. I cannot believe it that he might do this,' a relative stated. The family also revealed that Lakanwal is married with five children. The US government is yet to announce formal charges against Lakanwal, who was shot and detained at the scene. The incident has sparked a heated debate about the vetting process for refugees resettled under Operation Allies Welcome. Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem slammed the Biden Administration's handling of the program, calling for stricter vetting procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
