Two National Guard soldiers, Andrew Wolfe and Sarah Beckstrom, are fighting for their lives after being shot near the White House in Washington D.C. on November 26. The suspected shooter, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, allegedly drove from Washington state to target the soldiers. Lakanwal has been charged with three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and criminal possession of a weapon. However, these charges could be upgraded to first-degree murder if the victims' conditions worsen. Wolfe, 24, a US Air Force Staff Sergeant, and Beckstrom, 20, an Army Specialist, were part of the DC task force that was deployed in early August to address crime and homelessness in the capital. They were sworn in just 24 hours before the shooting and were deputized to conduct presence patrols. Both soldiers were armed at the time of the attack. Beckstrom, who volunteered to be on duty on Thanksgiving, was hit in the chest and head, while Wolfe's condition remains critical. The two West Virginians have served their communities with distinction, with Wolfe entering service in 2019 and winning numerous service medals. National Guard troops have been stationed in D.C. since August, deployed by President Donald Trump to address the city's crime and homelessness issues. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of these troops and the city's ability to protect them.
