A shooting in Washington D.C. on November 26 has left two National Guard members in critical condition. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021, is in custody. According to reports, Lakanwal carried out a targeted attack on the National Guard soldiers, firing upon them as they turned a corner. Other troops intervened to bring the situation under control. Lakanwal used a handgun in the attack, and both victims suffered head injuries. The suspect also sustained injuries, but they are not life-threatening. In response to the incident, President Donald Trump issued a warning, stating that there would be a 'steep price to pay' for the shooter. He also expressed support for the National Guard and law enforcement. Following the shooting, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that President Trump has directed the deployment of 500 additional National Guard troops to D.C. Some have linked the shooting to a recent video by Senator Mark Kelly and five other Democrats, in which they suggested that troops can refuse to follow 'illegal orders.' However, there is no evidence to support this claim as the motive behind the attack. The FBI is currently investigating the incident as a potential terrorism case, given Lakanwal's country of origin. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with the D.C. Mayor describing it as a 'targeted attack.'
