Deadly Blast in Dhaka: Tensions Rise Ahead of Tarique Rahman's Return to Bangladesh

A crude bomb blast in Dhaka's Moghbazar area has claimed the life of a young man, identified as Siam, amid rising tensions in Bangladesh. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, when miscreants hurled a bomb from a flyover near the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad office, a site significant to the country's Liberation War veterans. According to Inspector Md Mohiuddin, the victim was a private shop employee who was having a cup of tea at a roadside stall when the bomb exploded, killing him instantly. The blast comes as Bangladesh prepares for the return of Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and heir to the influential Zia family, who is set to arrive in the country on Thursday after nearly 17 years in exile in London. Rahman's return has sparked elaborate security arrangements, with the government and BNP planning to gather millions of supporters to welcome him. The move comes amidst ongoing unrest over the killing of Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent student leader who was shot by masked gunmen on December 12. The BNP has planned a protest rally in Dhaka to mark the 10th day of Osman Hadi's death, while the government has ordered security measures to prevent any potential violence. The country is bracing for the February general elections, with Rahman emerging as a leading contender for prime minister.
