British politician Nigel Farage, the leader of the anti-immigrant Reform UK party, is facing intense scrutiny over allegations of making racist and antisemitic comments during his teenage years at an elite English school. Farage, who is currently the frontrunner to become Britain's next prime minister, has offered varying defenses to the claims, which resurfaced last week. In a recent statement, he expressed "genuine" regret if a former pupil felt hurt by his actions. However, a former classmate, film director Peter Ettedgui, has come forward with disturbing allegations. Ettedgui, who is Jewish, claims that Farage would often engage in verbal abuse, including making Nazi salutes and promoting racist ideologies. Farage has denied the allegations, stating that he would never engage in such behavior. However, in a previous interview, he admitted to participating in "banter" that could be interpreted as racist in today's context. The allegations, which are based on claims from over a dozen former pupils, have sparked widespread outrage. Reform UK has since released a statement defending Farage, but many have questioned the politician's sincerity. "This is a different ball game for Farage," said Robert Ford, a politics professor at Manchester University. "The recent sentencing of Reform's former leader in Wales, Nathan Gill, could be more damaging than these allegations.
