A gunman, identified as 37-year-old Michael Halberstam, who shot and killed a deputy while attempting to serve an eviction notice in Florida, has succumbed to his injuries. The incident occurred on Friday in Indian River County, near Vero Beach, where Halberstam's mother was trying to evict him. The confrontation turned deadly when Halberstam opened fire on two deputies, Terri Sweeting-Mashkow and another officer, as well as a locksmith who was assisting with the eviction. Sweeting-Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the sheriff's office, tragically lost her life in the shooting. The locksmith was rushed to the hospital and is currently in critical condition. According to Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers, the sheriff's office had received seven calls from the home over the past month, but deputies were not expecting any trouble when they arrived to serve the eviction notice. Flowers praised the fallen deputy, saying she was a dedicated and respected member of the team. In a poignant moment, Flowers posthumously promoted Sweeting-Mashkow to sergeant, saying her team would 'feel this forever.' The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
