A 37-year-old German woman of Congolese origin has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo for an attempted bank robbery. Honorine Porsche was found guilty of armed robbery in a military court in Kinshasa, the capital city, after a chaotic standoff at a RawBank branch in downtown Kinshasa on October 17. The brazen daylight attack drew security forces to the scene, and a tense standoff ensued, lasting several hours. Five people, including Porsche, were eventually arrested inside the bank. Although no one was injured, the bank reported that the equivalent of $20,000 in cash was stolen and has never been recovered. During her trial, Porsche admitted to taking the money but claimed it was later stolen from her by security forces. The incident sparked outrage in the DRC, where police brutality is a long-standing concern. Porsche's arrest was marred by allegations of abuse, with videos posted on social media showing her being partially undressed and groped by security forces. On Wednesday, Porsche refused to speak in court, citing a lack of strength. Her lawyer has indicated that she intends to appeal the verdict. Germany's consul in Kinshasa, Keno Grade, was present in court but declined to comment on the case.
