The Hamas militant group has urged mediating countries to pressure Israel to allow safe passage for its fighters trapped in tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip. The call comes after Israel's military said it killed over 20 Hamas members and apprehended eight more who attempted to flee the underground tunnels in the past week. According to Israeli media, between 100 and 200 Hamas militants have been trapped in tunnels under the city of Rafah for weeks, despite a US-brokered ceasefire on October 10. The ceasefire agreement, which Israel has been unwilling to compromise on, allows for the safe release of the fighters in exchange for surrender and disarmament. However, the Israeli government has maintained its stance on dismantling Hamas's military capabilities and demilitarizing the Gaza Strip. Hamas has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement by pursuing and arresting the fighters, and has called on mediators to take immediate action to ensure their safe return home.
