A devastating fire swept through seven high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong's Wang Fuk Court estate, claiming 13 lives and leaving dozens feared trapped. The blaze, which broke out on bamboo scaffolding outside the buildings, quickly spread, prompting authorities to declare it a level 5 emergency, the highest level. Nine people died on the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. At least 15 others were injured in the inferno. The fire also claimed the life of a 37-year-old firefighter who was rushed to the hospital. Eyewitnesses described thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the buildings, while flames spread rapidly on the scaffolding. The Tai Po district, where the fire occurred, is located in the northern part of the Chinese financial hub. Despite efforts to rescue those trapped, firefighters were unable to enter the buildings by nightfall. Authorities have set up a casualty hotline and opened temporary shelters for evacuated residents. The public is advised to stay indoors and avoid the area. The fire marks a tragic turn for Hong Kong, which has seen a significant decrease in deadly fires in recent decades due to improved safety measures. However, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks still present in densely populated areas like Hong Kong.
