As the family of Bethany MaGee, the 26-year-old victim of a brutal attack on a Chicago CTA Blue Line train, celebrates Thanksgiving together, they are reflecting on the resilience and strength of their loved one. MaGee was allegedly set on fire by Lawrence Reed, a 50-year-old Chicago resident with a lengthy criminal record, on November 16. The family is currently raising funds for her medical expenses through a GoFundMe page. In a heartfelt message, the family described MaGee as a 'beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, granddaughter, niece, and aunt' who loves living in Chicago. They also shared that her 'gentle spirit makes her a favorite with every pet she meets.' The family is requesting that the public respect MaGee's privacy, stating that 'this will be her story to tell – or not to tell – in the future.' Lawrence Reed, who has a history of violence and has been arrested 72 times, is currently facing federal terrorism charges for allegedly setting MaGee on fire. According to a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrest affidavit, Reed doused MaGee with what is believed to be gasoline, set her ablaze, and then walked away as the train pulled into a stop downtown. MaGee suffered severe burns to her head and body and was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, and a GoFundMe page set up for MaGee's medical expenses has raised over $52,000 in less than 8 hours. The family is grateful for the support and is focusing on providing love and support to MaGee as she recovers. 'In this season of Thanksgiving, we are so grateful for the chance to celebrate at Bethany's side,' they wrote. 'Thank you for keeping her and our family in your prayers.'
