The Nepal government has introduced Gen Z Martyr Day to honor the lives lost during anti-government protests in 2023. The day, observed on September 8, commemorates the 22 people, mostly students, who were killed after the then-government opened fire on protesters near the Parliament building in Kathmandu. In total, 76 people lost their lives during the two-day protests on September 8-9. As part of the tribute, the government has decided to issue identity cards to the families of the martyrs. The cards will be provided to the mother, father, husband, wife, unmarried son, and unmarried daughter of the victims. The Cabinet made this decision during a meeting on Monday. The protests, which led to the resignation of then-Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, saw widespread violence and the torching of several government buildings. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took over as interim prime minister on September 12 and advised President Ramchandra Paudel to dissolve parliament. The country is set to hold its next general election on March 5, 2026.
