Pelosi Slams Trump on 5-Year Anniversary of Capitol Attack: 'Sustained Assault on Truth'
Nancy Pelosi shared a post in remembrance of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, taking aim at Donald Trump while calling the incident “an attempted coup.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi marked the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack by taking aim at former President Donald Trump, calling it a 'culmination of a sustained assault on truth and democracy.' In a post on X, Pelosi remembered the devastating incident that left over 100 law enforcement officers injured and several people dead, as well as the bravery of those who defended the Capitol against the violent insurrection.
Pelosi described the attack as an 'attempted coup' aimed at nullifying millions of lawful votes and subverting the will of the American people. She praised the courage of public servants who stood firm against pressure, threats, and intimidation, and noted that the Constitution held strong despite the assault.
However, Pelosi warned that the danger did not end with the securing of the Capitol. She expressed concern that the same falsehoods that sparked the violence continue to be spread, and that the same contempt for democratic norms continues to erode the Republic. She also criticized Trump's blanket pardons for those involved in the attack, saying they 'sanitize an attack on the Constitution itself and endorse lawlessness.'
Pelosi called on the American people to remain vigilant and to defend democracy with clarity and resolve, rejecting political violence and demanding accountability for those who would place themselves above the Constitution. She concluded by saying that January 6th serves as a stark warning and a solemn charge to choose truth over lies, courage over cowardice, and democracy over autocracy, and that the future of the Republic depends on it.
