A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the Black Friday shooting at the Westfield Valley Fair Mall in San Jose. The suspect, who is a minor, was taken into custody on December 1 after a photo of him in handcuffs was shared on social media by the San Jose Police Department. A 21-year-old woman, who is believed to be a family member of the suspect, was also arrested on suspicion of aiding his escape. Preliminary evidence suggests the shooting was gang-related, with the suspect and his group allegedly wearing gang-related clothing. The victim, who was the intended target, is believed to be a member of a rival gang. The suspect had been on probation at the time of the shooting for a prior firearms offense and had been arrested earlier this year for carrying a loaded gun. The shooting occurred on November 28 at around 5:30 p.m. near the Macy's store on the upper floor of the mall. A verbal altercation between the suspect and the victim escalated, and the teen opened fire after pulling a handgun from his waistband. Three people were struck, including the intended target and two others who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The incident sent hundreds of shoppers into panic, with eyewitnesses describing chaos inside the mall. The mall was shut down temporarily, but reopened on Saturday afternoon with increased security presence. The suspect's case may be handled under juvenile justice provisions, which could influence the severity of possible charges and sentencing. Prosecutors may also face challenges establishing the role of the 21-year-old female accomplice. San Jose's chief of police, Paul Joseph, has criticized California's juvenile justice framework, arguing that lenient sentencing has emboldened young offenders. He called for more community-based interventions and rethinking of juvenile justice norms, saying that young offenders feel 'almost no fear of consequences' and are 'bringing guns into our malls and firing indiscriminately.'
