Get ready for the first of two SSI disbursements this December. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to distribute payments to approximately 7.5 million individuals, starting with recipients of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program on Monday, December 1. This marks the first of two SSI payments planned for the month. Typically, SSI payments are issued on the first day of each month. However, the January payment is being advanced to December 31 due to New Year's Day being a federal holiday. To be eligible for SSI benefits, you must have minimal or no income and resources, and be either over 65 years old or have a disability. The program is needs-based, rather than one based on contributions. The average monthly SSI payment is $717.84, with a maximum amount of $967 per month for individuals and up to $1,450 for couples. Some recipients may also receive additional state-funded payments. If you receive both SSI and standard Social Security, you'll receive the SSI payment on December 1 and the Social Security payment on December 3. For those who only receive standard Social Security, payments will be disbursed on specific dates in December, based on your birth month.
