A 34-year-old Taiwanese influencer, Pei-Yun Chung, is facing deportation after multiple incidents of dining and dashing at high-end restaurants in New York City. According to authorities, Chung, who lives in Brooklyn, has been arrested several times for allegedly failing to pay her bills at top restaurants. Chung, who boasts over 14,000 followers on Instagram and shares content related to luxury lifestyles, has a history of attempting to negotiate payment with restaurants. She was arraigned on charges of theft of services last week and is currently on supervised release. The influencer, who claims to be of Taiwanese heritage, has a master's degree in Information Experience Design from Pratt Institute and previously worked as a user experience consultant for JP Morgan Chase & Co. However, law enforcement officials claim she overstayed her student visa, which she arrived on in 2019. A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement hearing is expected to take place following Chung's court appearance, where she will likely face deportation proceedings. Immigration lawyer Gadi Zohar stated that the criminal charges against Chung are likely to prompt the immigration warrant and that she may be taken into immigration detention. Chung's social media posts have shown her dining at high-end restaurants, including Sea Thai and the Michelin-starred Misi, without paying her bills. Her actions have sparked concern among restaurant owners, who are now alerting one another to her tactics. As Chung navigates her deportation battle, her past as a child prodigy, having begun playing the violin at age three, and her receipt of a full merit-based scholarship in 2019, remain a part of her public profile. However, it is her recent actions that have put her immigration status in jeopardy.
