In a stark departure from tradition, US President Donald Trump turned the annual White House Thanksgiving turkey pardon ceremony into a platform for political score-settling. During the event, Trump pardoned two turkeys, Waddle and Gobble, but instead of focusing on the festive occasion, he used the opportunity to attack Democrats and revive a conspiracy theory about President Joe Biden's pardon process. The ceremony, which has been a yearly tradition since 1963, was meant to be a bipartisan moment of holiday cheer. However, Trump's remarks quickly turned the event into a 'roast' targeting his political opponents. He took aim at Chicago's crime rate, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and even went as far as to mock the idea of pardoning the Democratic leaders, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. Trump also used the occasion to boast about his economic achievements, citing a drop in egg prices and a predicted decrease in gasoline prices. However, these claims were met with fact-checks, revealing that grocery costs are still rising and gasoline prices are higher than last year. Despite the chaos, Gobble, one of the turkeys, remained calm and composed throughout the event. The birds were selected by North Carolina students in an online vote and will retire to a comfortable life after their pardon.
