A University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football player has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing two teammates inside a team facility on Saturday. Daniel Israel Mincey, a 20-year-old redshirt freshman from Florida, is accused of attacking fellow teammates JaSire Peterson and Joshua Underwood with a knife at the on-campus football operations building just after 10 am. Mincey, who played in one game for Kentucky in 2024 and transferred to UAB for the 2025 season, has also been charged with first-degree assault. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham on a $90,000 bond. According to UAB officials, both Peterson and Underwood were released from the hospital on Monday and are receiving counseling services. Interim Head Coach Alex Mortensen praised the team's support for the injured players, saying, 'They appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers.' The stabbing occurred just hours before UAB's Senior Day matchup against South Florida, which the team lost 48-18. Despite the incident, school officials and players decided to play the game after learning that Peterson and Underwood were in stable condition. UAB will close its season against Tulsa on Saturday in Oklahoma. The incident has left the UAB community reeling, with athletic director Mark Ingram acknowledging the gravity of the situation and the difficult decision to play the game despite the tragedy.
