The UK is bracing for an early and potentially severe flu season, with health authorities warning of a rapidly spreading virus. According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the mutated flu strain has triggered an unusual surge in cases, prompting concerns among experts. Prof Nicola Lewis, director of the World Influenza Centre, expressed her worries about the current situation, stating, 'We haven't seen a virus like this for a while. It does concern me, absolutely.' To mitigate the spread of infections, the UKHSA recommends basic precautions such as frequent handwashing, proper ventilation, and covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Additionally, the agency advises individuals who are feeling unwell to stay home and consider wearing a face mask when leaving the house to reduce the risk of transmission. Recent data shows a slight increase in flu cases, with a 9.9% rise in positive test rates over the past week. Meanwhile, the UK has secured a historic zero-tariff deal on pharmaceuticals with the US, which will see the UK National Health Service invest 25% more in new and effective treatments over the next three years. This agreement is expected to boost job creation and support the development of new medicines.
