Two US National Guard soldiers, deployed in Washington, were shot by an Afghan suspect near the White House on Wednesday. According to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, the soldiers have undergone surgery and are receiving treatment, with their prognosis guiding the charging decision. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, allegedly entered the US under 'Operation Allies Welcome' after the fall of Kabul in August 2021. Lakanwal, who is facing potential life imprisonment with terrorism charges, was carrying a revolver at the time of the shooting. The incident has sparked concerns over the presence of troops in American cities, leading to ongoing debates and court battles. US President Donald Trump has called for a reinvestigation of Afghan refugees who entered the US under the Biden administration. FBI Director Kash Patel and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser initially reported the two guards were in critical condition. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed the suspect's revolver and the guards' critical condition at the time of the shooting.
