A shocking incident unfolded near the White House on Wednesday, leaving two National Guardsmen critically injured. The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 42-year-old Afghan national, is in police custody. According to reports, Lakanwal first approached the guardsmen, targeting one of them from a distance of just a few feet. The first guardsman was shot and left critically injured. The second guardsman managed to take cover behind a bus stop, but was also shot and critically wounded. Investigations are ongoing, but Lakanwal has refused to cooperate with authorities. No identification was found on him at the time of capture, and he has not revealed his identity. In a dramatic turn of events, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey initially reported that the two guardsmen had been killed, but later corrected his statement, confirming that they are indeed in critical condition. At a press conference, officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, confirmed the guardsmen's condition and described the shooting as a 'targeted' attack. In response, President Trump ordered the deployment of 500 additional National Guard members to the city. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth vowed to ensure Washington, D.C. remains safe, stating that the deployment will 'stiffen our resolve' to protect the nation's capital.
