In a move to acknowledge the vital role of casting in film success, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the 98th Academy Awards in March 2026 will feature a new prize for achievement in casting. This addition brings the total number of awards presented during the live broadcast to 24, including the coveted statuettes for best picture, actor, and actress. The new prize marks the first time the academy has expanded its categories since best animated feature film was introduced in 2001. Members of the casting directors branch will play a crucial role in narrowing down the field to 10 shortlisted films, a process also used in categories such as documentary, international film, and visual effects. The shortlist will be revealed on December 16, with the final nominees announced on January 22. The 98th Oscars ceremony, set to air live on ABC on March 15 at 7 p.m. ET, will be hosted by Conan O'Brien.
