Anurag Kashyap has expressed his frustration with Indian theatres for allotting less screens to his films, such as Main Vaapas Aaunga and Bandar, compared to Hollywood films. He believes that this is affecting the word of mouth for his films, which often gain a cult status years later.
Kashyap recalls a time when filmmakers and theatres were more accommodating, citing the release of his 2014 film Ugly alongside PK. He says that theatres want to make money immediately and are not willing to give Indian films the proper shows they need to build up word of mouth.
The filmmaker also points out that regional films, such as those in Maharashtra, are given more attention and pride in their local cinema. He believes that Hindi films need more shows to reach their urban audience.
Kashyap's comments come as his fans continue to praise his films years after their release, often expressing disappointment that they did not get to see them in theatres.
