The music of Chhaava, a 2025 blockbuster, has sparked controversy after AR Rahman called it a 'divisive' film. However, an old interview resurfaced where director Laxman Utekar revealed why he chose Rahman for the film's score. In a 2024 interview, Utekar stated that he didn't want to limit the film's appeal to Marathis, but instead aimed for a global audience. He drew inspiration from international films like Gladiator and Troy, and wanted Chhaava to have a similar impact. Utekar explained, "I wanted a wide approach, not typical Marathi dialogues or songs. I wanted the world to know about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj." The film, starring Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna, and Akshaye Khanna, was a critical and commercial success, earning over ₹800 crore worldwide. Utekar's decision to collaborate with Rahman, a globally recognized composer, was a key factor in the film's international appeal.
