Anurag Kashyap: The Maverick Filmmaker Who Defied Bollywood Conventions Anurag Kashyap, the acclaimed director of Gangs of Wasseypur and Black Friday, has had a tumultuous journey in Indian cinema. His directorial debut, Paanch (2003), was shelved due to censorship issues. However, Kashyap's career took off after co-writing Ram Gopal Varma's Satya (1998), a game-changer that paved the way for his success. In a conversation with Komal Nahta on Game Changers, Anurag recalled a remarkable offer from producer Boney Kapoor. The mogul, impressed by Kashyap's work, promised, 'Point to any building from Bandra to Juhu, and I will buy you a flat there.' Kashyap humorously added that he thought he might get a bungalow after the film's release. Reflecting on his struggles, Anurag believes that releasing Paanch would have made him a different person. He made the film with newcomers to prove that storytelling, not stars, is the key to success. Although Paanch achieved cult status online, Kashyap couldn't prove his point after Black Friday and Wasseypur. He eventually stopped trying and began to detach. Paanch, inspired by the Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders, faced CBFC objections due to its violence, language, and depiction of drug use. Despite its fate, the film cemented Anurag Kashyap's legacy as a fearless storyteller who challenged Bollywood conventions. Kashyap's latest project, Nishaanchi, a crime drama set in early-2000s India, explores themes of crime, betrayal, and redemption. Although the film struggled at the box office, garnering ₹0.25 crore on its opening day and approximately ₹1.3–1.4 crore in its first 12 days, it marks another bold step in Kashyap's career as a director and writer.
