Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar is reviving the Indian box office, with its collections skyrocketing in the second week. Aditya Dhar's film is rewriting record books, thanks to exceptional word of mouth. Initially, it seemed like Dhurandhar would fall behind Ranbir Kapoor's Animal, but the spy thriller has caught up and is now poised to surpass its hyperviolent counterpart. The two films, released in December, differ in themes and genres but share a common trait - they feature top millennial stars as leads. Animal had a head start with a stellar trailer and great buzz, while Dhurandhar's trailer checked the boxes but lost some momentum as the release date approached. As a result, Animal collected a staggering ₹200 crore net in its opening weekend, while Dhurandhar lagged behind with ₹103 crore. However, the second weekend marked a turning point for Dhurandhar. The film set new Bollywood collection records for each of the four days, taking its global haul after 11 days to ₹600 crore. At this point, Animal had collected ₹737 crore, but it had already lost momentum. For instance, Animal earned ₹13.85 crore net on its second Monday, while Dhurandhar obliterated that with a ₹29-crore haul. Trade insiders estimate that Dhurandhar should cross the ₹850 crore barrier by Day 19, surpassing Animal's ₹835 crore collection by the end of its third weekend. However, the release of the Hollywood blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash this weekend may pose a challenge. Nevertheless, Dhurandhar is likely to finish ahead of Animal by the end of its run, with trade pundits predicting it to reach ₹1000 crore, if not more. Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar stars Ranveer Singh as Hamza, an Indian spy infiltrating the gangs of Pakistan's Lyari. The film has received praise for its performances, particularly those of Ranveer, Akshaye Khanna, and Rakesh Bedi. A sequel, which concludes the story, is set to release on March 12, 2026.
