Dulquer Salmaan's highly anticipated film Kaantha has experienced a decline in box office collections over the first weekend. The retro drama, directed by Selvamani and produced by Dulquer and Rana Daggubati, received mixed reviews in Tamil and Telugu. According to Sacnilk, Kaantha generated an estimated ₹3.87 crore in net sales in India on Sunday, bringing the domestic total to ₹13.22 crore. The film initially showed promise, earning ₹4.35 crore in India and ₹10.50 crore worldwide on its opening day. However, it witnessed a significant surge in collections on Saturday, with ₹5 crore in India and ₹16 crore worldwide. The film, set in 1950s Madras, tells the story of a superstar named TK Mahadevan (Dulquer) and his ego-driven conflict with former mentor Ayya (Samuthirakani), which leads to devastating consequences for a loved one. Bhagyashri plays a budding actress named Kumari, while Rana Daggubati portrays a police inspector named Phoenix. Despite the dip in collections, Dulquer Salmaan's performance as Mahadevan has been praised, with Hindustan Times noting that he delivers one of his career-best performances. The film's unique blend of retro acting style and engaging storyline has also been commended, with Samuthirakani and Bhagyashri receiving special mention for their performances. Kaantha was originally scheduled for release earlier, but was postponed to avoid clashing with Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra.
