The upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna has become a diplomatic hotbed, with five countries boycotting the event over Israel's participation. Despite the controversy, the host broadcaster ORF has pledged to maintain an unbiased stance. In a press conference, ORF's executive producer Michael Kroen stated that all official flags will be allowed, provided they comply with the law and regulations. The event will not be sugarcoated, and any booing from the crowd during Israel's performance will not be drowned out. The 70th edition of the contest, scheduled for May, will feature 35 entries, the lowest number since 2003. The boycotts come in response to Israel's participation, which has sparked outrage over the country's actions in Gaza following the October 2023 attack. ORF and the Austrian government have been vocal supporters of Israel's participation, with ORF Director General Roland Weissmann visiting Israel in November to show his support. The controversy surrounding the Eurovision Song Contest has drawn global attention, with the event typically attracting a massive audience. Last year's show drew around 166 million viewers, surpassing the viewership of the Super Bowl. The war in Gaza has resulted in devastating losses, with over 70,700 Palestinians killed, most of them civilians, according to health officials in Gaza.
