The upcoming Indian film 'Dhurandhar' starring Ranveer Singh has sparked controversy over its alleged portrayal of the life of late Major Mohit Sharma, a decorated Special Forces officer. Major Sharma's parents have petitioned the Delhi High Court, alleging that the film uses their son's life without consent. Major Mohit Sharma, who was killed in action in 2009 and posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, remains an iconic figure in the Special Forces and among Army aspirants. His brother, Madhur Sharma, expressed concerns over the film's similarity to his brother's story. Despite Aditya Dhar, the film's director, denying any similarity earlier, Madhur stated that online chatter raised concerns, citing reputable media channels and influencers drawing correlations. Represented by Samaanta Law Firm, Major Sharma's parents filed a writ petition on November 28, alleging that the filmmakers have used their son's life as a 'commercial commodity' without permission or the Army's sanction. The petition claims that this violates the family's privacy rights and raises national-security concerns, as the depiction of Special Forces tactics could reveal sensitive information. The Delhi High Court directed the CBFC to expedite its certification process and carefully consider the objections raised by Major Mohit Sharma's parents. The court did not issue a stay order on the film's release, but instructed the board to consult the Indian Army, if necessary, before granting clearance. Madhur emphasized that the family is seeking only acknowledgement and due diligence, stating that there is no benefit they are looking for. They want people to take a sympathetic and empathetic perspective, recognizing the impact of the film's portrayal on families who have lost loved ones in military operations. 'Dhurandhar', a spy thriller, is set for a release on December 5, starring Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and Sara Arjun. The controversy surrounding the film has raised questions about the portrayal of real-life events in Indian cinema and the rights of families affected by such portrayals.
