The upcoming spy thriller Dhurandhar has sparked a heated debate over its graphic violence. Director Suparn Varma has spoken out against the hypocrisy of audiences who praise similar scenes in foreign films but condemn them in Bollywood. In a recent X post, Varma emphasized the need for equal recognition and celebration of Hindi cinema, just like its international counterparts. The film, directed by Aditya Dhar, is loosely based on the Lyari Gang Wars in Pakistan and Indian intelligence's role in it. Starring Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, and Akshaye Khanna, Dhurandhar is set to release on December 5. Varma's own directorial release, Haq, a courtroom drama inspired by Shah Bano Begum's landmark case, received positive reviews and commercial success. Varma believes that Hindi filmmakers deserve equal appreciation for their unique storytelling and artistic vision.
