IFFK 30: A Global Cinematic Celebration Kicks Off in Kerala on December 12

The 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is set to begin on December 12, featuring a diverse lineup of 206 films from 82 countries across 26 categories. The eight-day festival will kick off with the historical drama 'Palestine 36' by Annemarie Jacir, which has earned widespread acclaim and won the Best Film award at the Tokyo International Film Festival. This year's edition will pay tribute to the cinematic legacy of Egyptian maestro Youssef Chahine on his birth centenary, with a retrospective section featuring his seminal films. Indonesian auteur Garin Nugroho will be the Contemporary Filmmaker in Focus, with five of his major works included in a dedicated segment. The World Cinema category will present 57 critically acclaimed films from global contexts. The festival will also celebrate the contributions of Mauritanian filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako, who will be conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award. A special package titled 'The Global Griot: Sissako’s Cinematic Journey' will showcase five of his notable works, exploring themes of globalisation, displacement, and identity. Additionally, the festival will feature curated packages such as Female Focus, Latin American Package, Country Focus: Vietnam, Festival Favourites, and Kaleidoscope. The Malayalam Cinema Now and Indian Cinema Now sections will showcase the current landscape of filmmaking in the state and the country, respectively. The festival's official distribution of delegate cards was inaugurated by Cultural Affairs Department Director Divya S Iyer, with national award-winning actor Lijo Mol Jose receiving the first delegate kit. The festival promises to be a rich cinematic experience for festivalgoers, with a diverse range of films and packages that cater to various interests and tastes.
