Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has expressed frustration over the struggle of independent films to secure space in Indian theaters. Speaking at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Haasan emphasized the need for a more inclusive and diverse cinematic landscape. Haasan, a celebrated Tamil cinema icon, has a long history of pushing boundaries with his offbeat films. From 'Apoorva Raagangal' to 'Nayakan,' his experimental projects have consistently found success at the box office. However, he lamented that independent cinema often gets confined to a narrow, commercialized space. "I've been saying this for 40 years – independent cinema shouldn't be forced to fit into a mainstream mold," Haasan said in an interview. He added that India's diverse film culture should be celebrated and nurtured, rather than restricted. Haasan's own film, 'Amaran,' premiered at IFFI 2025, showcasing his commitment to independent storytelling. The film, based on the life of Major Mukund Vardharajan, serves as a powerful tribute to India's brave military heroes. As the Indian film industry continues to grow and evolve, Haasan's words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting independent cinema. By giving a platform to unique voices and stories, India can truly showcase its cinematic diversity and creativity.
