The release of Vaa Vaathiyaar, starring Karthi and Krithi Shetty, has been postponed indefinitely due to a ₹21.78 crore debt owed to businessman Arjunlal Sundardas. The Madras High Court (HC) has issued a stay on the film's release across all platforms until the debt is repaid. The case dates back to 2011 when producer KE Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green and Arjunlal Sundardas agreed to co-produce a movie with a ₹40 crore investment each. However, Sundardas withdrew from the project after investing ₹12.85 crore and was subsequently declared insolvent in 2014. His assignee moved the HC in 2016 seeking repayment of the outstanding ₹10 crore with 18% interest from 2013. The assignee recently approached the HC, arguing that Gnanavel failed to repay the debt despite repeated opportunities. The producer offered to pay ₹3.75 crore within 24 hours and proposed to offer property documents for the remaining balance, but the court rejected the proposal. A distributor for the film, Prathyangira Cinemas, confirmed the postponement of the release, citing 'unforeseen circumstances.' Studio Green has announced that the film will release 'soon' without addressing the debt issue. The film's new release date remains uncertain. Karthi and Krithi have been promoting the film consistently despite the ongoing court case, which has left fans shocked. The film was initially planned for release in January 2025 for Pongal but was postponed to December 5 and later to December 12. The Madras HC's decision to halt the release has now postponed the film indefinitely until the debt is repaid.
