To commemorate the birth centenary of acclaimed filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival is hosting a special exhibition at Nandan Foyer. The showcase, titled 'Centenary Tribute Ritwik Ghatak: The Subaltern Voice,' features a collection of rare memorabilia, including photos, handwritten letters, and original censorship certificates. The exhibition, inaugurated by veteran actress Madhabi Mukherjee and Ghatak's son Ritban, runs until November 13 and is a tribute to the filmmaker's life and work. Ghatak, born on November 4, 1925, and passed away on February 6, 1976, was a renowned Indian filmmaker and writer, known for his powerful films such as 'The Cloud-Capped Star' and 'A River Called Titas.' His trilogy on partition and displacement, including 'Meghe Dhaka Tara,' 'Komal Gandhar,' and 'Subarnarekha,' is being screened at the festival as part of the tribute. The exhibition also features a discussion, 'Ritwik Ghatak Memorial Conversation,' on November 12, attended by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and a felicitation ceremony for actors, students, and technicians who worked with Ghatak on November 13. The event aims to recognize Ghatak's contributions to Indian cinema and promote a deeper understanding of his life and work.
