A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting of John Beam, the coach of Laney College's football team and a prominent figure in the Netflix series 'Last Chance U'. Beam remains in critical condition after being shot on campus in Oakland, California. This shocking incident is the second school shooting in two days in the city. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee has described Beam as a 'giant' and a mentor to many young people. For over 40 years, he has helped shape leaders both on and off the field. Beam, who has been the athletic director at Laney College since 2020, joined the college in 2004 as a running backs coach and became the head coach in 2012, winning two league titles. Under his guidance, 20 of his players have gone on to play in the NFL. Beam's former players, including brothers Rejzohn and Nahshon Wright, who now play for the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints, have expressed their concern for his well-being on social media. A spokesperson for the Peralta Community College District has described the shooting as 'devastating' and 'heartbreaking', and expressed concern for Beam's current medical status. The shooting occurred just a day after a student was shot at Oakland's Skyline High School. The student is currently in stable condition. The Oakland Police Department has confirmed the arrest of a suspect, but further details are not yet available.
