Malayalam Cinema Legend Sreenivasan Passes Away at 69, Leaving a Legacy of Laughter and Social Commentary

Kochi, Kerala: The Malayalam film industry is in mourning following the passing of actor, screenwriter, and director Sreenivasan, a stalwart of the cinema world, at the age of 69. Sreenivasan, who had been battling health issues, including a heart surgery in 2022, died on Saturday morning at a government hospital in Kochi. Sreenivasan, known for his sharp wit and thought-provoking screenplays, was a household name in Kerala, with a career spanning over four decades. Born on April 6, 1956, in Pattiam, Kannur district, he made his acting debut in the 1976 film 'Manimuzhakkam'. He went on to create memorable characters, often alongside stars Mohanlal and Mammootty, and was widely acclaimed for his screenplay writing, beginning with 'Odaruthammava Alariyam' in 1984. The late filmmaker's directorial debut, 'Vadakkunokkiyanthram' (1989), is considered a classic in Malayalam cinema and won the Kerala State Film Award. He also directed 'Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala', which won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues. Sreenivasan's ability to bring the lives of ordinary people to the silver screen with a touch of humor earned him a special place in the hearts of Malayalis. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan paid tribute to Sreenivasan, saying, "He was a versatile talent who rose to prominence in every sphere of filmmaking, bringing the life of the common man to the silver screen and leading the audience to levels of awareness he desired." The Chief Minister also remembered Sreenivasan's unique ability to present profound themes in an engaging manner, saying, "He was a filmmaker who successfully presented his social perspectives through satire.
