A chaotic scene unfolded at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday when Lionel Messi's visit turned into a violent confrontation between spectators and event staff. Fans, frustrated by being unable to see the football icon, hurled objects at the ground. Amid the mayhem, Bengali actor Subhashree Ganguly posted pictures with Messi on social media, sparking outrage and accusations of insensitivity. Subhashree Ganguly, who represented the Bengali Film Fraternity at the GOAT India Tour event, faced severe backlash for her actions. Critics argued that posting pictures with Messi was insensitive, given the events that had transpired. Many felt she was rubbing salt into the wounds of fans who had been denied a glimpse of the superstar. However, Subhashree's husband, filmmaker and TMC MLA Raj Chakraborty, came to her defense. He questioned the media's treatment of his wife, pointing out that while many journalists were present, the scrutiny had disproportionately targeted Subhashree due to her public profile. The event, which was meant to celebrate Messi's visit, was marred by mismanagement. The prime organiser was arrested, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered a high-level inquiry and apologised to fans who had been denied a chance to see Messi. Raj Chakraborty also highlighted the double standard in how his wife was treated. He noted that being an actress did not disqualify her from being a Messi fan and that the media scrutiny had crossed the line from protest to humiliation.
