Curry Barker's low-budget horror film Obsession has become a box-office phenomenon, raking in a staggering $286.5M globally. The film, produced on a micro-budget of $750,000, has beaten The Blair Witch Project's record of $248.6M, making it the highest-grossing film acquisition in history.
Acquired at Sundance 1999 for over $1M, Obsession has defied horror movie trends, posting consecutive weekend revenue increases and becoming a historic box-office success. Starring Indie Navarrette and Michael Johnston, the film has bested its opening frame and even surpassed the global cume of Get Out, which finale at $259.9M.
Jason Blum's Blumhouse Atomic is making $17 million in box office bonuses on Obsession as an executive producer who helped market the film. The film was independently produced by Under the Shell, Tea Shop Productions, and Capstone Pictures, and premiered in the midnight section of last year's Toronto International Film Festival.
Focus Features acquired the film for $15 million and negotiated a box office bonus structure of $2 million after the film hit $25 million domestic at the box office. Blum's company has earned in the ballpark of $17 million, while Capstone is set to make $45 million to $50 million on the film.
