Director SS Rajamouli found himself at the center of controversy after his comments about God at the Varanasi Globe Trotter event sparked a backlash on social media. Ram Gopal Varma has now come to Rajamouli's defense, stating that being an atheist in India is not a crime and that he has every right to express his beliefs. According to Varma, the real issue is not Rajamouli's atheism, but the fact that he has achieved success without believing in God. This, Varma claims, has led to jealousy among those who have failed despite their faith. He also pointed out that Article 25 of the Indian Constitution protects the right to not believe in God. Varma also questioned the logic of those who are criticizing Rajamouli for showing God in his movies. He argued that a filmmaker doesn't need to be a gangster to make a gangster film or a ghost to make a horror film. He also pointed out that God has given Rajamouli more success and wealth than many believers could ever hope for. The controversy began when Rajamouli apologized to fans for technical glitches during the event and expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, stating that he didn't believe in God. The Vanara Sena organization has lodged a complaint against Rajamouli, accusing him of hurting Hindu sentiments. Rajamouli's upcoming film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is set to be released in 2027.
