The grand re-release of Ram Gopal Varma's 1989 classic Siva, starring Nagarjuna, has left audiences in awe. The film's 4K restoration, undertaken by Annapurna Studios, was a monumental task that spanned seven years. At the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Nagarjuna and CV Rao, Chief Technology Officer at Annapurna Studios, shared the challenges they faced in bringing this cult classic back to life. According to Rao, the restoration process began before 2019, but the team hit a roadblock when they discovered that the film's negatives were deteriorating rapidly and labs were shutting down due to the pandemic. The team had to digitize and secure the film properly, a task that proved to be daunting. The negatives were so sticky that they had to undergo ultrasonic cleaning multiple times just to make them dry and rollable for scanning. The team achieved a 4K scan, but their relief was short-lived as the footage was riddled with extensive scratches, dust, and torn frames. Cleaning the film frame by frame took an additional 10 months. However, the biggest challenge came when they discovered that two reels of the sound negative were completely damaged, rendering the audio unusable. The team scoured the country, reaching out to nearly 20 exhibitors, before finding two surviving reels that allowed them to recover the missing audio. The restored version of Siva was released in theaters earlier this month, featuring renewed audio and video. With its grand re-release, Siva is once again captivating audiences, and its 4K restoration is a testament to the dedication of the team behind it. As Nagarjuna put it, 'The remastered version of Siva is stunning. I see so many films coming to life with this.' The film's restoration is a reminder of the importance of preserving our cinematic heritage and bringing classic films back to life for future generations to enjoy.
