The arrest of iBomma pirate Immadi Ravi has sparked a debate about the merits of online movie streaming. While some fans have compared Ravi to the legendary outlaw Robin Hood, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has fired back, calling out their ignorance. In a scathing post on X, RGV argued that movie piracy will never stop because of the human desire for convenience and the availability of free content. He pointed out that comparing Ravi to Robin Hood is misguided, as the latter's actions would be considered terrorist activities in today's world. RGV also criticized those who justify piracy as a way to combat high ticket prices or overpriced snacks. He drew parallels between pirating movies and robbing a showroom, saying that such thinking would lead to social collapse and anarchy. Interestingly, RGV revealed that even people from the film industry, including himself, watch pirated content due to convenience or financial constraints. He suggested that the only effective way to stop piracy is to criminalize both the suppliers and the viewers. To drive home his point, RGV advocated for making the names of pirated content viewers public, as fear is a more effective deterrent than morality. The Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, VC Sajjanar, had earlier revealed that Ravi's arrest was a significant blow to the piracy ring, which had stored over 21,000 movies on his hard disks. Ravi reportedly earned ₹20 crore through various means and collected private data of around 50 lakh people who used iBomma. RGV's comments have sparked a heated debate about the root causes of piracy and the need for a more effective solution to combat it.
