Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter is set to make her major studio film debut in a musical inspired by the timeless tale of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.' The project, which is currently untitled, has been greenlit by Universal Pictures and will be written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Lorene Scafaria, known for her work on 'Hustlers' and 'The Meddler.' Carpenter, who has recently earned six Grammy nominations for her seventh studio album 'Man's Best Friend,' will not only star in the project but also produce alongside Marc Platt through his Universal-based banner Marc Platt Productions. Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will also serve as producers through Alloy Entertainment. The musical marks a departure from Carpenter's recent focus on her music career, in which she has appeared in Netflix films such as 'Tall Girl' and 'The Hate U Give.' Sources close to the development have revealed that Carpenter first brought the concept to Universal in 2024, with Scafaria joining the project as writer and director as it took shape. Scafaria's latest credits include directing HBO's 'I Love L.A.' and episodes of the Emmy-winning series 'Succession.' Her 2019 film 'Hustlers,' starring Jennifer Lopez, grossed over USD 100 million at the North American box office. The 1865 novel 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' has been a source of inspiration for artists and filmmakers across generations, with multiple film and television adaptations, including Walt Disney's 1951 animated classic and Tim Burton's 2010 live-action reimagining. Netflix had previously acquired a musical adaptation of the novel from Carpenter's At Last Productions in 2020, but the project did not move forward. Universal's new musical promises to bring a fresh take to the beloved classic, and fans of Carpenter and Scafaria are eagerly awaiting the project's release.
