Hollywood A-lister Scarlett Johansson is set to lead the next installment of The Exorcist franchise, marking her foray into full-blown horror. The two-time Oscar nominee has been locked in to star in the untitled feature, written and directed by horror master Mike Flanagan. Flanagan, known for his work on The Haunting of Hill House, praised Johansson's talent, saying she will bring a 'grounded and real' performance to the film. The new movie will be the seventh film in the franchise, which began with the 1973 Oscar-winning film starring Ellen Burstyn. It will tell an original story set in The Exorcist universe, separate from the 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer. Universal and Blumhouse are aiming to revamp the series after the previous film failed to meet expectations, despite earning $136 million globally. Flanagan, who has built a reputation for crafting unsettling stories, has described this Exorcist project as 'the scariest movie I've ever made.' Johansson's casting is seen as a significant move to revitalize the franchise, following her success in Jurassic World: Rebirth, which grossed nearly $869 million worldwide. The actress, who has expanded her creative footprint with her directorial debut Eleanor the Great, will next be seen in James Gray's Paper Tiger opposite Miles Teller and Adam Driver. Johansson's addition to the Exorcist franchise is a sign of serious ambition, and her schedule had to be coordinated around her upcoming projects. The untitled Exorcist film is expected to take priority, with Mike Flanagan at the helm. The project marks a new chapter in the long-running franchise, which has been rebranded to appeal to a wider audience.
