Acclaimed director Abhishek Chaubey reflects on his gritty 2019 drama Sonchiriya, which earned critical acclaim for its raw storytelling and authentic performances. However, Chaubey believes that the film's success was a product of a bygone era, where actors were willing to take creative risks and audiences were open to alternative narratives. The ecosystem that supported films like Sonchiriya has vanished, says Chaubey. The director, who co-wrote the film with Sudip Sharma, claims that even securing funding for such a project today would be a challenge. "No one would give you ₹10 to make a film like Sonchiriya," Chaubey states. Sharma adds that even if the film managed to secure funding, it's unlikely that anyone would watch it in theaters. Chaibey attributes Sonchiriya's success to a 15-20 year window during which there was space for alternative cinema. The film, which featured an ensemble cast including Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, and Manoj Bajpayee, tells the story of dacoits in 1970s Chambal Valley. Despite failing to perform well at the box office, Sonchiriya has developed a cult following over the years. With its budget of ₹30 crore, the film earned ₹8.50 crore worldwide, but Chaubey believes that such a project would not be viable today.
