Sydney Sweeney's string of box office disappointments continues with her latest release, Christy. The biopic about boxer Christy Martin, directed by David Michôd, opened to dismal numbers, ranking as one of the worst wide releases in Hollywood history. Christy, which hit theatres on November 7, struggled to attract audiences, earning just $1.31 million in its opening weekend. With a wide release in 2,184 screens across North America, the film's average of $600 per theatre is a stark reminder of its commercial failure. According to Box Office Mojo, Christy's opening ranks among the bottom 10 of all-time wide releases in North America, excluding re-releases. In comparison, other pandemic-era releases have fared better. The film's international performance was equally underwhelming, with a paltry $39,000 earned outside North America. With a reported budget of over $15 million, Christy is likely headed for losses at the box office. This marks Sydney Sweeney's fourth consecutive box office bomb, following Eden, Immaculate, and Madame Web. Her next project, The Housemaid, a psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig, is scheduled to release on December 19. Christy's commercial failure is all the more surprising given Sydney Sweeney's physical transformation for the role, which saw her gain considerable mass and muscle. The film also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O'Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.
