In a cinematic twist, filmmaker Shih-Ching Tsou brings to life the struggles of a single mother and her two daughters in 'Left-Handed Girl', a film chosen to represent Taiwan at the 2026 Oscars. Shot on iPhones, the movie weaves a poignant tale of family, love, and resilience in the bustling Taipei night market. Tsou's solo directorial debut was two decades in the making, inspired by her grandfather's disapproval of her using her left hand. She shared the story with Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker, and together they began working on the project in 2010. However, financing proved to be a challenge. Undeterred, Tsou continued to visit the night market vendors, collecting their stories and gaining new inspiration as a mother. She said, "I'd always go back to visit them, getting to know their stories and the life in the night market... it's like collecting stories and also maturing this whole idea.
