Akshaye Khanna's portrayal of Rehman Dakait in the recent film Dhurandhar has been widely praised, but few know the true extent of the gangster's brutal crimes. Born in 1975, Rehman Dakait, whose real name was Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch, rose to power in Lyari, Karachi, in the 2000s. He began his life of crime at just 13, stabbing someone, and by 19, he had committed a heinous act of murdering his own mother, strangling her and hanging her from the ceiling fan. This disturbing act is recreated in Dhurandhar, albeit with some creative liberties. Rehman's reign of terror lasted for nearly a decade, with his cousin Uzair Baloch as his right-hand man. According to reports, they would play football with the severed heads of their opponents as a show of strength. The gang's brutality was unmatched, and Rehman's eventual downfall came in 2009, when he was killed in a shootout with Karachi Police during a government crackdown on Lyari gangs. The film Dhurandhar, which features a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal, takes creative liberties to tell the story of India's war against terror in Pakistan. While the film has received mixed reviews, it has earned ₹152 crore gross worldwide in its opening weekend. Despite the creative liberties taken, the real-life story of Rehman Dakait serves as a chilling reminder of the horrors that unfolded in Lyari during that time.
