BERLIN - The world of dance and entertainment has lost two of its most iconic figures, twin sisters Alice and Ellen Kessler, who have passed away at the age of 89. The sisters, known for their incredible talent and chemistry on stage, achieved international success in the 1950s and 60s, performing alongside legendary artists such as Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, and Harry Belafonte. Born into a family of dancers, the Kessler twins began their training at a young age and joined the Leipzig Opera children's ballet. After fleeing to West Germany in 1952, they went on to dance in a revue theater in Düsseldorf before being discovered by the director of the Lido cabaret theater in Paris in 1955. Their international career took off, and they became a staple of the entertainment world, touring globally and performing in Rome. Despite being offered a spot in the iconic film 'Viva Las Vegas' alongside Elvis Presley in 1964, they turned down the opportunity, fearing it would typecast them as musical film stars in America. Even in their 80s, the sisters continued to perform on stage, crediting their success to discipline, gratitude, time, humility, and most importantly, their unbreakable bond as twins. In a poignant statement, Alice Kessler reflected on the secret to their enduring partnership, saying, 'Being a twosome only has advantages. Together you're stronger.' The news of their passing has left fans and fellow performers around the world in mourning, but their legacy as two of the most talented and beloved dance stars of their time will live on.
