Kannada star Upendra is promoting his upcoming Telugu film, Andhra King Taluka, amidst a contentious issue in Karnataka. In an interview, he was asked about the recent trend of Telugu films facing backlash over promotional posters lacking Kannada language. Upendra responded by highlighting the success of the Telugu film Pushpa, which performed well in Karnataka despite not being released in Kannada. According to reports, Pushpa: The Rise (2021) collected ₹19.69 crore in Karnataka, while its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024), earned ₹98.4 crore in the state, with a significant portion coming from the Kannada version. When questioned that the issue isn't about dubbing, but rather about promoting films in their original language with Kannada posters, Upendra maintained that Kannada-speaking audiences want to watch films in their native language. This debate comes after a July incident at a Bengaluru theatre, where Kannada activists protested the lack of Kannada language on promotional posters for Pawan Kalyan's film, Hari Hara Veera Mallu. The incident sparked online discussions and raised questions about why this issue hasn't affected Telugu films in the past. Upendra's comments have added fuel to the conversation, especially with his own Telugu film, Andhra King Taluka, set to release on November 27.
