Veteran Kannada Actor 'Mysore' Umesh Passes Away at 80 After Prolonged Battle with Cancer

Bengaluru - Kannada cinema legend 'Mysore' Srikantayya Umesh has left behind a legacy of unforgettable performances after succumbing to cancer on Sunday. The 80-year-old actor, who began his journey in the film industry at just four years old, had been battling the disease for some time. Born on April 24, 1945, in Mysuru, Umesh's illustrious career spanned over five decades and saw him feature in more than 350 films. He started his career in theatre and went on to join the renowned Gubbi Veeranna's troupe. Umesh's big break in films came with the 1960 movie 'Makkala Rajya', but it was a decade later that he truly made a name for himself in 'Katha Sangama'. The talented actor went on to work with some of Kannada cinema's biggest stars, including Rajkumar, Vishnu Vardhan, and Ambareesh. He also had the opportunity to share screen space with Tamil superstars Sivaji Ganesan and Rajinikanth. Umesh's versatility as an actor earned him a Karnataka State Film Award in 1975 for 'Katha Sangama' and a Karnataka Nataka Akademy Award in 2013 for his contributions to theatre. Union Minister and JD leader H D Kumaraswamy paid tribute to the late actor, saying, 'Umesh had a unique ability to make audiences laugh with his fresh humour.' His performances in films like 'Guru Shishyaru', 'Haalu Jenu', and 'Apurva Sangama' will be remembered for generations to come. His passing is a significant loss to the Kannada art world, but his legacy will continue to inspire and entertain fans for years to come.
