Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra has sparked a heated debate on social media with his scathing comments about the influence of online celebrities. The renowned director, known for his critically acclaimed films, expressed his views on the impact of social media on the entertainment industry during a masterclass session at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Chopra criticized the phenomenon of 'overnight influencers' who gain millions of followers by simply posing for photos or sharing provocative content. He questioned the notion that brands are willing to partner with individuals who have built their fame solely on social media, rather than genuine talent or hard work. "What's happening is that these influencers think they're legends, and brands are going to them and saying, 'Sell our product,' " Chopra said. "But you as an individual have to choose whether you want to be that or strive for happiness and joy.
